Sleep Your Way to Youthful Skin

It’s commonly known that getting a good night’s sleep can be great for your overall health. But did you know that how you sleep can also work wonders for your skin?   

Chances are, you’ve heard the phrase “Get your beauty sleep!” at some point in your life. We’re here to tell you, it isn’t entirely myth. Science has been able to link a full night of Zzs with a glowing complexion and younger-looking skin. 

While you snooze, your body’s cellular repair rate increases and boosts blood flow, allowing your skin to regenerate and replenish skin cells, so you wake up to a hydrated, healthy glow. This restorative state also produces collagen, which supports elasticity and helps stave off wrinkles, decrease the appearance of under-eye circles, and reduce inflammation.  

Unfortunately, getting your beauty sleep isn’t always as simple as the internet makes it seem. The reality is, with the day-to-day stresses of family, work and life itself, looking after YOU is often the last thing on your mind. But, as we like to say here at The Care Principle, you can’t take care of others when you’re running on empty. And neither can your skin.

Self care is a practice and it starts with believing that you are deserving of care.

While it may not be “perfect” or possible every night, here are some steps you can aim for before bed to make sure you are reaping all the benefits sleep has to offer your skin. 

Set a regular bedtime

Getting enough sleep sometimes means planning ahead for an early night. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours of sleep per night for overall health. This gives your body enough time to go through the restoration process we mentioned above. So, if you know you wake up for work every morning at 6 a.m. you should aim to “hit the hay” no later than 10 in the evening.  

Don’t skip the skincare 

Going to bed with your makeup, dirt and oil is never a good idea, no matter how tired you are. Set the mood

With the business of life, carving out time for yourself at the end of the day can feel like a reset. Here are some ideas to help get you in the right mindset for sleep:

  • Hop into cozy, loose-fitting PJs
  • Light a candle or turn on an essential oil diffuser 
    • Low lighting can help signal to your brain that it’s time to say goodnight.
    • Aromatherapy can be a powerful tool for those that have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep.
  • Enjoy a cup of chamomile tea 
    • Chamomile tea has been used as a natural remedy to reduce inflammation and anxiety and treat insomnia. 
  • Reduce screen time 30 minutes before bed
    • Instead of keeping the television on, or scrolling through social media, try reading a few pages of a book, journaling your thoughts from the day or meditating on gratitude. 
  • Try a weighted blanket
    • Studies have shown weighted blankets relax the nervous system and increase serotonin and melatonin levels.
